Join us for Music at the MonDak: A concert by the Sam West Trio! Friday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the MonDak Heritage Center. FREE to the public! A music workshop precedes the concert from 5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.
Sam West Trio is bass, drums, guitar, and vocals creating groove-based music. Sam West is bass player/singer/composer. Influences and comparisons range from the lyrical craft of Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, the bass playing style of Jaco Pastorius and Chris Wood, and the melodic sensibility of Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter. SWT is most comfortable in a live room where improvisation takes hold. Listeners can expect a fun foray of tunes by Howlin Wolf, Earth Wind and Fire, and the Funky Meters – as well as original compositions that range from blues, rock, funk, jazz – or, as some would call it, simply ‘fusion’.
The band includes vocalist Sam West, percussionist Ron Coulter, and guitarist Jay Reed. From Nashville, West boasts a background in jazz, acoustic, and experimental music. West’s 300 original compositions range from jazz to folk to blues to free form. He studied jazz performance and creative writing at Middle Tennessee State University and has toured over 30 states and internationally. Coulter is Instructor of Percussion at Casper College in Wyoming. He has toured in 49 states and in countries across the world, and he’s presented at over 90 universities. Reed hails from Toronto, Canada, and cites Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd as some of his influences. He’s played thousands of gigs in 20+ years of performing.
